Janine Firpo, the President of Sevak
Solutions, and Chad Schneller, the
CEO of Financial Ideas, completed a
collaboration agreement today
providing for the development and
deployment of new technology to
better serve the needs of
financially distressed US Military
personnel.Credit worthiness will be
determined through a combination of
qualified referrals, online
financial evaluation, and successful
completion of financial literacy
courses. Micro-loans will be made
and managed through credit unions
that already have strong linkages
with military personnel. The
combination of Sevak Solutions'
international expertise with
affinity group micro-lending
together with Financial Ideas’
“Social Capital” electronic credit
evaluation tools will improve
financial alternatives for
hard-pressed military families. |

Mobile Banking in East Asia |

In October 2008, Janine Firpo, the
president of Sevak Solutions
relocated to Jakarta, Indonesia
where she is working with IFC, a
member of the World Bank Group, to
work with IFC’s regional advisory
teams to accelerate the development
and large-scale roll-out of mobile
money solutions in East Asia and the
Pacific. The EAP M-Banking Program
will focus on three key areas: (1)
support of Central Banks as they
assess the regulatory requirements
for mobile money and mobile banking;
(2) work with partners to establish
pilots and build the business case
for m-banking; and (3) provide
knowledge sharing, advocacy, and
education among market players
across the region. Initial
activities will include seminars,
market studies, and regulatory
assessments. Specific projects and
partners will differ by country,
depending on local requirements.

Sevak Solutions was delighted to learn about the December 2007 announcement by IBM and CARE that they were going to establish an Africa Financial Grid. This effort parallels the vision that Sevak Solutions has been promoting since its inception. The grid will be built around a shared services and infrastructure model designed to help microfinance institutions reduce operating costs, streamline lending processes, scale rapidly, and integrate with other resources such as credit bureaus, financial institutions and international payment networks. Financial Sector Deepening Kenya (FSD Kenya) and the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), today announced awards under the Kenya Social Protection Payments (SPP) Challenge Fund. The Sevak Solutions Consortium was one of the winners and will be awarded approximately $400,000 to develop a point-of-sale based solution for financial inclusion of the poorest in Kenya. More...
